This guide has been prepared by Black Country Driving School, and is intended to provide general information to help drivers to understand SORN, Statutory Off Road Notification, and to stay legal; whilst every effort has been made to ensure that the information is accurate and up to date, it is not intended to be a legal guide.

A SORN, Statutory Off Road Notification is a notification to DVLA, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, that your vehicle is not being used and is being kept off the public roads on private land.

It is free to register a SORN for your vehicle.

A SORN can be registered online at the GOV.UK website or by telephoning DVLA on 0300 123 4321 or by post using form V890.

Once a vehicle has a SORN registered

To put a car back on the road and cancel a SORN you need to insure the vehicle, get an MOT, and then pay the vehicle excise duty, road tax.

You can only drive a vehicle with a SORN on a public road to go to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment.

You face court prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500 if you use it on the road for any other reason.

Once the vehicle excise duty is paid the SORN is automatically cancelled.
